For Students
Although as an institute of the Academy of Sciences, the Institute does not have the status of a university, it is significantly involved in cooperation with several universities at all levels of study—bachelor's, master's, and especially doctoral. We lecture, supervise PhD students and graduates, and participate in the organization of studies through membership in the scientific and disciplinary councils of universities.
The cooperation focuses mainly (but not exclusively) on the following universities and faculties related to our fields of study:
- Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University
- Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University
- Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU)
- Faculty of Electrical Engineering, CTU
- Faculty of Information Technology, CTU
- Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering, CTU
- Faculty of Management, The Prague University of Economics and Business, Jindřichův Hradec-through a common laboratory SALOMEIII
- Czech University of Life Sciences Prague - through a common laboratory Talisman
Ph.D Studies at the UTIA
Doctoral studies at the Institute are an excellent opportunity to start a scientific career at a top institute. Students are still students at their home university, which provides the teaching. However, UTIA provides the supervisor, the dissertation topic, and the full research and financial support needed to make it a success. The supervisor and the student formulate the dissertation topic, considering the student's professional interests and abilities. Students can join project and grant teams and obtain a work contract at the Institute during their studies. As organized at the Institute, doctoral studies have proved to be a very effective and mutually beneficial link between scientific institutions and universities. In the last five years, 26 students have successfully defended their dissertations. Some of the dissertations have won major Czech and international awards.
Those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. can either make an appointment directly with their prospective supervisor or contact the Institute's Deputy Director for Research.
Diploma and Bachelor Theses at the Institute
The Institute announces several topics for final theses and year projects every year. The topics usually fall within the current research projects being carried out at the Institute. High-quality graduates can get part-time jobs at the Institute.
Interested students are typically recruited from the audience of our semester lectures and discuss the topics directly with the lecturers. Other interested parties may choose a department of the Institute that suits their topic and contact the department head.
Student Internships
Are you not looking for a thesis/baccalaureate topic or studying at a university? No matter, we still have an exciting student internship offer for you. It is not just "playing science"; it's real scientific work on real research projects adapted to the student's abilities and capabilities. We are involved in two significant programs where every young scientist is sure to find an interesting topic. For undergraduates, there is the Radius Centre, which interconnects students, scientists, universities, and the private sector. High school students can use the Open Science program, which offers many opportunities across all disciplines.
Those interested in an internship at the Institute can contact either the potential internship supervisor directly or the head of the department in which they would like to intern.
The Degree of DSc.
Science education also includes awarding the Doctor of Science (DSc) degree, which has been awarded by the Academy of Sciences since 2003 to candidates with the highest scientific qualifications. People from outside of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and even from abroad can apply for this title. The Institute is the seat of the committee for the defense of DSc dissertations in Computer Science and Cybernetics.
