UTIA in the Strategy AV21

The mission of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) is top research focused on the problems and challenges of contemporary society. Topics such as : the future of the Czech energy sector, the health of citizens, artificial intelligence, or the quality of public policies present complex areas of problems whose solutions require a wide interdisciplinary research, both basic and applied.

The strategy of the Czech Academy of Sciences responds to current social challenges with a thoughtful formulation of research programmes based on cooperation of scientific fields and institutions. The basic programme framework of the The AV21 Strategy was adopted by the Academy Assembly in December 2014. The research programmes of the CAS are open to partners from universities, corporations, and institutions of state and regional administration, as well as foreign research groups and organisations. The research programmes are proposed and formulated in agreement between the leadership of the CAS and the directors of the institutes with regard to trends in global science, social relevance and the National Priorities of Oriented Research. The motto of the Strategy AV21 is "Top research in the public interest".

UTIA is involved in six research programs of the Strategy. The most significant has so far been participation in the 2015-21 program "Hopes and Risks of the Digital Age," which our Institute conceived and led. Jan Flusser (2015-2019) and Barbara Zitová (2019-2021) coordinated the project. Other participants were the Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Computer Science.

The program is presented in a short video here (in Czech):

In the current programs are "Breakthrough Technologies of the Future" (2022-26) and "Artificial Intelligence for Science and Society" (2025-28), UTIA is responsible for research topics related to the deployment of artificial intelligence tools in technical, economic and humanities fields (coordinator for ÚTIA is Barbara Zitová).

To a lesser extent, the UTIA was also involved in the programs "Diagnostic Methods and Techniques" (2015-2021), "Water for Life" (2020-2024) and "The City as a Laboratory of Change" (2020-2024).
