Michal Šorel získal magisterský a doktorský titul z informatiky na Univerzitě Karlově v Praze v letech 1999 a 2007. V letech 2012 až 2013 pracoval na řadě výzkumných témat v oblasti počítačového vidění na Heriot-Watt University ve skotském Edinburghu a na Bernské univerzitě ve Švýcarsku. V současné době je vědeckým pracovníkem Ústavu teorie informace a automatizace Akademie věd České republiky. Michal Šorel byl recenzentem řady časopisů a konferencí, včetně IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing a IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. Organizuje jarní a zimní školy zpracování obrazu pořadané Oddělením zpracování obrazové informace. Je zástupcem ÚTIA v organizačním výboru Pražského informatického semináře (https://www.praguecomputerscience.cz/) a národním projektu Česká cesta do vesmíru (https://www.vzhurudovesmiru.cz/).
