Jiří Filip získal magisterský a doktorský titul v oboru kybernetika na Českém vysokém učení technickém v Praze v letech 2002 a 2006. Od roku 2002 působí jako vědecký pracovník v Ústavu teorie informace a automatizace (ÚTIA) Akademie věd České republiky. V letech 2007–2009 absolvoval postdoktorskou stáž jako stipendista Marie Curie na Heriot-Watt University v Edinburghu. V roce 2010 mu byla udělena Cena Otto Wichterleho pro mladé vědce a v roce 2011 byl členem týmu, který obdržel Cenu Akademie věd České republiky za vynikající výsledky velkého vědeckého významu. Byl hlavním řešitelem řady národních a evropských grantů, je spoluautorem knihy Vizuální textura a autorem více než 90 vědeckých publikací a tutoriálů. Jeho výzkum zahrnuje všechny aspekty vzhledu materiálu a integruje metody z oblasti zachycení a zpracování obrazu, počítačové grafiky a percepční analýzy na pomezí akademické sféry a průmyslu.
