Petr Tichavský vystudoval Fakultu jadernou a fyzikálně inženýrskou (FJFI) na ČVUT v Praze, 1982-1987, obor matematické inženýrství.
V ÚTIA AVČR začal pracovat již v druhém ročníku jako studentská vědecká síla, pod vedením doc. Vošvrdy. Po absolvování roční vojenské služby nastoupil v UTIA na postgraduální studium, které ukončil v roce 1992 získáním titulu CSc v oboru teoretická kybernetika. Od té doby pracuje jako vědecký pracovník v této instituci, v oddělení Stochastické informatiky. V období 1994-1995 absolvoval 10 měsíční stáž na Yale University v USA, podpořenou Fulbrightovým stipendiem.
V roce 2018 P. Tichavský obhájil v AVČR doktorskou disertaci a získal titul DSc. (research professor). Profesně P. Tichavský spolupracoval s FJFI ČVUT, kde byl školitelem několika studentů a studentek. Nejvýznamnějším studentem, se kterým P. Tichavský spolupracoval je nynější Prof. Koldovský na Technické Univerzitě v Liberci.
P. Tichavský má čtyři již dospělé děti a dvě vnučky. Žije s manzelkou a dvěmi nejmladšími syny v Praze. Je členem Křesťanského společenství Praha.
