Narodil jsem se v roce 1970 v Drachtenu v Nizozemí. Studoval jsem teoretickou fyziku na univerzitě v Groningenu od roku 1988 do 1994. Od 1995 do 1999 jsem byl doktorandem pod vedením Franka den Hollandera na univerzitě v Nijmegenu (doktorská práce: Large Space-Time Scale Behavior of Linearly Interacting Diffusions). Od roku 1999 do 2005 jsem pracoval jako postdok na TU Berlin (18 měsíců), v Erlangenu (4 roky) a v Tübingenu (posledních 6 měsíců). Dostal jsem habilitaci na univerzitě Erlangen-Nuremberg v roce 2007 (práce: Extinction versus unbounded growth). Od roku 2005 jsem v Ústavu teorie informace a automatizace AV ČR, v Praze.

Moje vědecké zájmy se týkají teorie pravděpodobnosti, v oboru který zahrnuje systémy částic, perkolaci a další náhodné modely se silnými korelacemi v prostoru a v času. Ačkoli původní podnět ke studiu těchto modelů přišel z teoretické fyziky, mnoho modelů, kterými jsem se zabýval, je (alespoň částečně) motivováno problémy z (populační) biologie. Protože explicitní řešení obvykle nejsou k dispozici, jde hlavě o to najít metody, které vedou k dobrým kvalitativním nebo aproximativním výrokům o těchto modelech. Jsem spoluvynálezcem Brownovy sítě, spojitého modelu větvících se a splývajících Brownových pohybů.

Od roku 2007 obvykle přednáším každý semestr jeden předmět na Karlově univerzitě, na tématech jaká jsou Systémy částic, Kvantová pravděpodobnost, Markovovy řetězce, Velké odchylky, Perkolace a Náhodné grafy. Moje skripta o Systémech částic jsou na arXivu.
