Profesor Michal Kočvara se ve svém výzkumu zaměřuje na nelineární a semidefinitní optimalizaci, optimalizaci elastických konstrukcí a optimalizaci s rovnovážnými omezeními. Než se přesunul do akademického prostředí, strávil několik let v průmyslu, kde si osvojil schopnost efektivně propojovat teoretický výzkum s praktickými potřebami průmyslové praxe.

Kromě svého působení v Akademii věd České republiky zastává profesor Kočvara také paralelní pozici na University of Birmingham, kde působí od ledna 2007. Dříve se podílel na výzkumných projektech na univerzitách v Bayreuthu a Erlangenu v Německu.

Jeho nedávný výzkum byl podpořen významnými iniciativami, jako je Horizon 2020 (ITN) a EPSRC (Bridging-the-Gap), a zahrnoval spolupráci s řadou akademických a průmyslových partnerů napříč Evropou. Profesor Kočvara je (spolu)autorem monografie a více než padesáti odborných článků, které se věnují různým aspektům matematické optimalizace a optimalizace mechanických konstrukcí.

Vyvinul nebo se podílel na vývoji několika široce používaných softwarových nástrojů pro nelineární optimalizaci a optimalizaci elastických struktur, které nacházejí uplatnění jak ve výzkumu, tak v průmyslové praxi. Působil také jako dlouhodobý hostující výzkumník na prestižních institucích, mimo jiné na Institute of Mathematics and its Applications při University of Minnesota (2003), Technické univerzitě v Dánsku (2007) a Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics na UCLA (2010).
