ÚTIA Contributes to the New Czech Academy of Sciences Educational Trail
On Friday, September 25, 2026, a new educational trail will officially open on the grounds of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague 8. The trail presents the work of the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences based in this part of Prague. ÚTIA is contributing to the project with its own interactive exhibit – a Galton board.
Designed as an “open-air science center”, the educational trail features seven interactive exhibits. They introduce visitors to a range of topics explored by the participating institutes and offer an opportunity to experience science directly in a public space.
ÚTIA’s Galton Board
ÚTIA’s exhibit is a Galton board, which provides a hands-on demonstration of basic principles of probability theory. As the balls pass through the board, they repeatedly change direction at random, gradually forming the characteristic shape of a normal distribution.
The Galton board is based on a simple principle that makes it possible to observe how individual random events can produce a regular pattern when repeated many times.

Grand Opening
The educational trail will officially open on Friday, September 25, at 4:00 p.m. in front of the main entrance to the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences at Pod Vodárenskou věží 1, Prague 8.
Following a brief welcome, the opening programme will feature speeches by Ondřej Gros, Mayor of Prague 8; Soňa Ehlerová, a member of the Academy Council of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Chair of the Academy’s Council for Academic Media and Public Outreach; and representatives of the participating institutes. The programme will also include a performance by the Amazing Theatre of Physics (ÚDIF).
After the opening, visitors will be able to explore the individual exhibits and walk along the educational trail.
The programme will take place outdoors. In case of bad weather, the opening programme and the ÚDIF performance will move to the Dvořák Hall at the entrance to the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
